It sounds like a con: more power *and* better MPG? On a turbodiesel it's mainstream thermodynamics. Here's the engineering behind economy remaps — and the honest limits of the claim.
Of everything on our services board, the economy remap attracts the most scepticism — and fair enough. *More performance and less fuel* sounds like a perpetual-motion pitch. But the effect is real, repeatable and grounded in how diesel engines convert fuel into motion. It just needs explaining properly, including the part most tuning websites leave out: the driver is half the equation.
Engines have a 'sweet spot' — and factory maps keep you out of it
Every engine has a map of its efficiency called brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC): how many grams of fuel it burns per kilowatt-hour of work. Efficiency isn't uniform — there's an island, typically at low-to-mid RPM and moderate-to-high load, where the engine turns diesel into motion most efficiently. Outside that island, the same work costs more fuel.
A standard 2.0 diesel making peak torque at 1,750–2,500rpm spends surprisingly little of your commute inside its island, because the factory calibration — written for worldwide worst cases — delivers its torque cautiously and late. You compensate without noticing: one gear lower, half a throttle more, a thousand RPM higher, all day long.
What the economy map changes
- Torque arrives earlier. Boost and fuelling are optimised so peak torque lands lower in the rev range — the engine pulls cleanly from 1,500rpm instead of needing 2,200.
- Injection timing is optimised for UK fuel. EN590 pump diesel supports more efficient combustion phasing than the global-average assumption in the stock file.
- Throttle mapping stops lying to you. Progressive pedal response means you request the torque you want once, instead of overshooting and correcting.
The result: the car does the same journeys at lower RPM in higher gears, spending more of its time inside the BSFC island. The fuel saving comes from where the engine operates, not from magic. You short-shift because the engine finally lets you; sixth becomes usable at 50mph; the motorway cruise drops 200rpm. Over a tank, that's real money.
The honest limits (read this bit)
Now the part that separates engineering from marketing. The driver closes the loop. A remap changes what the engine *can* do; your right foot decides what it *does*. Drive the newly-livelier car like you stole it and your MPG will fall, not rise — the same physics, pointed the other way. Our 'up to 15%' figure comes from customers who drive normally and let the earlier torque do its job. Also true:
- Petrols respond less. Spark engines run near stoichiometric fuelling already; economy gains are modest. The economy remap is a *diesel* product — anyone promising 15% on a petrol is selling you the brochure.
- A sick engine saves nothing. A clogged DPF, tired injectors or dragging brakes eat any calibration gain. Health first, map second.
- Motorway-heavy drivers gain most. Steady-state cruising is where the lower-RPM operating point pays daily; pure city stop-start dilutes it.
We calibrate the engine's half of the bargain. The pedal is still yours.
Who it's for
High-mileage commuters, caravan and trailer tow cars (earlier torque transforms hill starts and A-road holds), vans on delivery routes, fleet runners watching pence-per-mile.
